this is the OOC thread for our game of Shotgun Diaries
Some general info about the game(play) follows.
Please read this carefully. I will gladly answer any questions.
RulesThe original PDF is only 18 pages and freely available. If you haven't gotten a copy yet, let me know and I'll get you one.
CharactersThere are five types of characters that someone can play. I don't want to have multiples of the same character at a time, so first come first serve. Don't worry, there will probably be some deaths of characters which means everyone will probably get to play a different character type at some point. Can everyone post their character type along with a name, and perhaps an occupation (professional or spare time) which explains the archetype?
Bio and description are welcome, but don't overdo it: your character may eventually die a horrible death and you'll have to create new one when that happens.
If someone is adamant about playing an archetype I'll allow 2 of the same archetype.
The possible Archetypes are as follows
Clever (4d6 on any roll involving tools, machines, or devices)
Strong (4d6 on any roll involving physical actions)
Sneaky (4d6 on any roll involving stealth)
Fast (4d6 on any roll involving speed)
Dangerous (4d6 on any roll involving weapons)
SanctuariesAt the start of the game, every Survivor rolls four dice. All dice showing 6 are added to the supply pool. Sanctuaries are considered "safe zones" and generally don't incur rolling any risks while inside one. If your supply pool drops to zero, the sanctuary is considered depleted and is no longer safe (IE: no electricity, food, bandages etc.) and Zombies may get in. Zombies can also get into a sanctuary via the Narrator/Zombie Master spending one on the Zombie clock.
Survivors can search for new sanctuary by rolling a risk. This risk roll is 4d6 (for your archetype) + xd6 for other survivors in your area. If there were more 6's rolled than there are survivors than sanctuary was found. If multiple survivors rolled for sanctuary add the total amount of 6's everyone rolled together. This will also determine the type of sanctuary found: An abandoned school, a grocery store, a gun shop, etc.
The total number of 6's rolled will then be added to the Survivor's supply pool.
SuppliesSupplies can be used by any survivor to add a bonus die to their risk roll. When using a supply bonus, be sure to notate this within your roll. Every in game day will lower the supply rate by 1. When the survivor's run out of bonus dice they will need to find a sanctuary to replenish their supply pool.
Roll results and posting:When there is no inherent danger or zombies you don't need to roll any dice, you can freely move about and roleplay. When zombies/danger are present you need to state what you would like your character to do and roll the appropriate number of D6's. If you are doing something within your archetype that is 4D6. You can roll dice in the your post by clicking on the little Die button where all the other buttons are. You can also type [ R ] without the spaces and that will count as a roll as well. The first roll(s) in the set will be counted as the Fear Die.
When you're attempting to do something that is considered a risk. Create a post stating what you want your character to do and roll your dice. When you complete the post, your rolls will show up in the post, if you rolled any successes, go back in and edit your post underneath your rolls with what you want your character to do. If your only successes were from fear dice, make sure to create your post accordingly (Run away, hide, save yourself.)
Example
I'm a Strong survivor forcing an elevator door (4 dice). I have a crowbar (so 5's are a success) and 3 other survivors with me (3 bonus dice.)
my roll will look like
O7Mb2TFT7d6 = 2 Successes! Nice!
Zombie ClockBecause we aren't playing in real-time, we can't use real-time to advance the Zombie Clock. Instead I will be increasing the zombie clock for each new page of posts in the In Character Thread. This should NOT encourage Out Of Character. Discussions that can be kept to In Character discussion should be kept there. If I see this is being abused I'll just up the Zombie Clock without their being a new page. After every new page created in the In Character Thread the players will have the chance to write in their Zombie Diary.
Zombie Diarythe Diaries are going to have their own thread. I will post the rules for them in that thread.
Characters and Equipment
To simplify things a little bit, I'm going to put a restriction on how much gear your character can specifically carry at any one time. That will be two tools (Crowbar/Axe) and two weapons (Handgun,Katana.) If you find anymore gear or items and don't want to carry it, the item will be placed into the generic supply pool as an extra D6.
I would also like us to use our signatures to notate our current active characters, survivor type, current held gear, etc. if that works out well.
Misc. When posting in the In Character Thread we want to be able to distinguish OOC things such as actions you may want your character to take.
For that we may want to use a different font Color. I'm open to suggestions on how we take care of that.
I will post an example post of how a game might go. Feedback is encouraged.
